...and would normally go to somewhere like M&S for their trousers, but didn't want to go (thanks to the shocking build quality recently)...
...where else would one go...?

Not Tesco, as they aren't big enough...

need to generally carry a 44/46 waist with a 33" leg :-)

Basically, I reckon you're out of luck: build quality is low pretty much everywhere these days since it all comes from the same source (China).

Don't know about your size, I'm afraid, but the other major department stores are perhaps worth a look. I wouldn't bother with the trendier end of the market for trousers - I'm a 36" waist and I don't think I've ever found trousers to fit in, say, Top Man or Zara Man or whatever. BhS I find even worse for quality than new M&S, although it is a bit cheaper. John Lewis is Ok quality but quite expensive for what you get. Debenhams is cheap and not too awful quality IME.

Good luck - buying trousers is my all-time least favourite shopping activity. I did have a good experience recently, though. I went to an old-fashioned Gentlemen's Outfitter in the sticks - real 'suits you sir' place - and picked up about three decent pairs for reasonable prices.
